Reel Seats

Reel seat hardware of any manufacturer may be used to enhance the look of your custom rod.  My preferred supplier is REC Components, fabricators of some of the finest fishing rod hardware available.

Wood Inserts

The wood insert is an important component which has a strong effect on the overall appearance of the rod.  Many hardwoods are available, some very commonly used for fly rods, others are less common but still make for an appealing look.  Any hardwood can be used, procured either by me or if you have your own wood I can use it, provided it has sufficient hardness.  Please see my page on wood turning to read more about creating custom wood inserts on my micro-lathe.

Guides

I will work with you to determine the type of guides you wouldl ike on your rod.  My preference is Recoil guides fro REC components, but can use any guides such as Snake Brand and others.  Recoil guides are lightweight wire guides with superb resistance to impact and low friction.  I carefully space and check the spline of the rod bend when placing guides for the best performance.

Wraps

I pride myself on the high quality of my threadwork and attention to detail in my varnishing.  The color of the thread wraps sets the rod off and is one of the greatest contributors to the rod's appeal.  I do simple multi-color straight wraps with a layered varnish finish as smooth as glass.  I do not carry the finish onto the surface of the rod, instead engding the finish at the edge of the thread.  Most commercial manufacturuers carry their epoxy onto the rod surface, a look I personally find unappealing.
